About the Arranger

David Howard Williams

David Howard Williams (1946-2007) served as director of choral activities at Central College in Pella, Iowa, from 1979 to 2006. Before coming to Central, he worked in the same capacity at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Westminster College (Salt Lake City, UT), and Lynbrook High School (NY). Born in Missouri and raised in New Jersey, Williams earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Music from the University of Southern California, both in choral conducting. He earned a Bachelor of Music in theory and composition from Arizona State University, with additional composition study at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Iowa.

Williams’s choirs performed widely in the United States and Europe, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine. Through his study and promotion of Romanian music, Williams traveled to Romania many times to guest-conduct choral festivals, present symposium papers, and lead his choirs in performances of Romanian choral works. His advocacy was recognized in 2004 with an honorary doctorate from the National University of Music-Bucharest, Romania.

Williams wrote his spiritual arrangements for his choirs, in particular Central College’s A Cappella Choir and the choir of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Ridgewood, New Jersey. His creative output also includes an operetta, large choral works with orchestra, and several other choral compositions and arrangements. His early SATB compositions Gloria and Easter Introit were published by the Theodore Presser Company.

About the Editor

Sean F. Vogt

If you’re interested in my bio, please visit www.SeanFVogt.com. Of deeper interest is the personal connection of how these came to be. Dr. Williams was my choral professor at Central College. He frequently offered me the opportunity to conduct the choir in concerts, gave me CDs and books from his personal library, nurturing me in multiple ways (including at the keyboard). Dr. Williams was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2004; he passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2007.

These arrangements would not have been possible without the approval of his widow, and my voice professor, Dr. Anne Petrie. Dr. Petrie is also responsible for assigning me to be the accompanist for one of her star students – now my wife.

Thank you to my friend and colleague Dr. Kevin Johnson, Director of the Spelman College Glee Club, for connecting me with Lion & Lamb Publishing who looked over the penned-manuscripts and said, “We’ll publish these.”
