Dr. Kevin Phillip Johnson is a conductor, composer, arranger, and educator whose choral works are performed by ensembles around the world. Grounded in African American sacred music, his works carry both historical depth and an energy that connects with modern ensembles and their audiences.

He serves as Director of Music at the Lyke House Catholic Center at the AUC and Associate Professor of Music at Spelman College, where he teaches choral conducting, literature, music theory, and music technology. He has also served as a music consultant for Catholic Archdioceses nationwide, and brings more than thirty years of experience as a Director of Music at churches across the country.

An active clinician and guest conductor, Dr. Johnson has provided choral workshops, master classes, seminars, and retreats for music educators and churches throughout the United States and Europe. His works have been performed at all-state choral festivals, Catholic Archdioceses nationwide, and on international stages. In March 2016, he conducted a performance at the White House for President Barack Obama.

As a composer, Dr. Johnson has received commissions from leading institutions and organizations including Spelman College, the Dominican Friars, the Archdiocese of Chicago, and the Knights of Peter Claver. His catalog includes seven mass settings — among them The Mass of Faith, The Preacher’s Mass, The Mass of St. Benedict the African, and The Mass of St. Peter Claver — along with more than 300 psalm settings, the large-scale works Lift Every Voice and Sing Trilogy and Spirituals, and a growing body of sacred songs and choral arrangements.

His published works appear with Carl Fischer Music, GIA Publications, Colla Voce, Treble Clef Press, and his own Lion and Lamb Publishing imprint. In 2022, he joined the Carl Fischer catalog with the Soulful Singing Choral Series — a collection of spirituals and original compositions crafted for the modern treble ensemble.
